Contradicting its statements earlier this week, Microsoft now says it will offer at least one public beta of Office 2010, though the software giant did not disclose a firm date. A Microsoft spokesperson was quoted as saying that its assertion to the contrary gave "the wrong impression."
"Although we are not disclosing a date for the public beta, there definitely will be one," the spokesperson says. The spokesperson says that the Office 2010 development cycle follows the pattern of previous iterations, with both technical previews and a public beta.
"This development cycle for Office is no different than it was in years past; technical preview is usually invite-only, but still goes out to hundreds of thousands of people, and there is a public beta cycle where millions can download and try Office," the spokesperson says.
It seems the confusion occurred when a different spokesperson claimed earlier that Microsoft did not plan on offering a public beta as it did with Office 2007, instead mentioning only a closed technical preview that would take place starting in the third quarter of 2009.
There’s still no firm timetable for Office 2010's public beta, and Microsoft also has not specified the number of Office 2010 betas Microsoft will produce or what it will be called.
For Office 2007, Microsoft delivered two public betas; the first in March 2006 and the second—called “Beta 2 Technical Refresh”—in September 2006.
While the betas were in progress, Microsoft charged users $1.50 to download a preview version of the productivity suite and try it out in their Web browsers. Microsoft said in July 2006 that it was overwhelmed by the positive responses and quick adoption, and was forced to “implement a cost-recovery measure” for users who wanted to try out the suite.
Microsoft remains undecided about whether it will implement a "pay-to-play" requirement for users who want to try out Office 2010 in beta, the spokesperson says.
"We are still working out the delivery options and will share additional details later this year," according to the spokesperson.

While you're at it, grab the Windows 7 Professional
This may shock you to your very core, but Microsoft charges way too much for its software. I mean, $679.95 for Office Ultimate 2007? Really? Even the upgrade version (for anyone who was crazy enough to splurge on Office 2003) runs a jaw-dropping $539.99.
Yo, Microsoft! Reality is calling. Pick up the phone!
Fortunately, there are alternatives. As I mentioned in "Six Free Software Programs You Need Right Now," Lotus Symphony offers many of the same core features as Office--but costs nothing.
Of course, sometimes you need the real McCoy, especially if you're a student. If you are, and have a valid e-mail address to prove it, you can get Microsoft Office Ultimate 2007 for just $59.95.
While you're at it, grab the Windows 7 Professional Upgrade for just $64.95. (Price for non-students: $199.99.)
Both deals are part of a Microsoft promotion called The Ultimate Steal--and at those prices, "steal" is the right word. Heck, even I consider $59.95 a fair price for Office Ultimate. (As for Windows 7, well, $64.95 is reasonable, though I'd sure like to see it below $50.)
But wait, there's more: If you order Office 2007 prior to September, 2010, you'll get a free upgrade to Office 2010 when it becomes available (most likely in June).
To see if you're eligible for the deal, visit the Ultimate Steal site, click Buy Now, and then enter your college/university e-mail address. In short order you'll get an e-mail with the link you need to order your discounted software.

Windows 7 later is very straightforward
Last Friday Microsoft allowed all and sundry access to the beta version of its next operating system, Windows 7. I’m not suggesting you rush online to although you might get a pleasant surprise. Everyone I’ve spoken to, including those who have been using the private beta version which preceded it, has good things to say.
What a contrast to Vista, which attracted a fair amount of opprobrium in both its beta and release versions.
I figured that Microsoft CEO, Steve Ballmer, would be the best person from whom to get a top level view. He dedicated 90 seconds to Windows 7 at last week’s CES show in Las Vegas. If you want to hear his words, fire up and advance to 21m 57s (just in time to hear him tell how “excited” he is. Is this the most overused, and insincere, word in US presentations, I wonder?)
Anyway, to save you the bother, here are the key attributes that he felt worth mentioning: improved simplicity, reliability and speed; do everyday tasks faster and easier; boot more quickly; longer battery life; fewer alerts; better entertainment and ability to work with other entertainment devices; and, user interface improvements like touch.
You can watch an abbreviated Ballmer and a demo by Charlotte Jones. And you can watch a webcast demo (on a netbook) by a pre-beta user (last November). The first is slick, the second is real. Both will give you a sense of what makes Windows 7 different to what’s gone before.
Anything which helps you start work sooner after switch on and accelerates your work gets my vote. With lower power consumption and less demand on resources, it seems to reverse the trend towards ever greater software bloat and ever higher spec’ machines. Seems to me that Windows 7 has a slight tinge of green about it. Probably as a by-product of recognising that we like to work on ever smaller devices.
I can’t help noticing that the Windows mobile operating system (the one used in some smartphones) is creeping up towards the number 7 as well. I think it’s at 6.1 at the moment. I’m guessing that, with Ballmer’s talk (before the Windows 7 bit) of convergence between devices (phones, PCs, TVs and the cloud), the two operating systems will converge on the same number and feel similar. It would make sense. And going back to simple numbering would move the company away from Vista, which was a bit of a psychological dead end. Even though it now works pretty well.
As I said at the beginning, you’d probably prefer to wait for an official release which is, in theory, due next year. Having said that, I’m hearing very good things about the beta. If you’re on XP and you’re happy, stay there. If you really need Vista, then get it because you’ll find that migrating to Windows 7 later is very straightforward. Moving from XP to either Vista or Windows 7 is very similar, the Microsoft installer will provide semi-automated help. The alternative is to do a clean install, but this means that you need to take responsibility for backing up all your existing data and applications, including some stuff in hidden directories. Unless you have a techie to hand, you really don’t want to do this.
This is the first time I can remember looking forward to a new Windows release instead of dreading it. And anyone who knows me will realise that this is close to a miracle.

Win 7 has brought to the PC industry
Windows 7 Launch Starts Here!
As Windows 7 begins its assault on the consumer retail marketplace today, so far, despite a few questionable decisions, the marketing, merchandising, and retail preparation appear to be clicking on all cylinders. Since I’m not a product reviewer I can’t comment on how “insanely great” Windows 7 might be, but I can give Microsoft kudos for the preparation and first spate of advertising. Let’s look at 3 buckets.
1. Inventory prep has been spectacular. This past weekend I happened by a Best Buy store (as you can imagine I do this pretty often) and there was not one single PC for sale with Vista on it. Lots of Windows 7 machines, however, all of which were marked “not for sale until October 22.” Someone did a great job in the supply chain making this happen. This will give Win 7 a tremendous boost out of the gate.
2. First ad deals have been well-thought out and innovative. At their initial introduction I was very critical of MS pricing for Win7 upgrades. Over $100 is far too much to move the population rapidly off of Vista (and according to percent of households have a desktop running Vista and 40 percent have a notebook with Vista - so there are a lot of folks to move). But, I think the initial offer in some of last Sunday’s circulars, which offered a Win7 upgrade for just $50 ($70 off) with the purchase of a Win7 PC, is brilliant. It gives incentive to some of that huge XP installed base to do the right thing and upgrade into a new PC while offering them a way to cost-effectively upgrade that companion notebook they have bought in the last two and one-half years which is running Vista. We hope to see lots more innovative offers focused on those multi-PC households as they represent the biggest opportunity for new sales and upgrades as well.
3. The work done with PC OEMs to align product cycles with Win 7 has also been spectacular. Never before has the industry launched such a variety of new form factors, price points, technology upgrades, and design innovations at one time. With Win7 delivering improved capabilities in power management, networking, media, and the variety of systems available appeal to a wider range of buyers than ever before. This selection ought to help drive PC sales through the holiday season, not just as replacements, but to get consumers to begin rethinking what the right level (i.e. much higher) of PC ownership and usage should be in their home and entice them to reconnect more strongly with the PC experience.
As PC sales and boxed copy sales begin today we will keep our eye on the sales trends in our retail tracking service to get confirmation that consumers also see the change Win 7 has brought to the PC industry. We expect to see increased marketing and merchandising focused on the upgrade buyer and the multi-PC household opportunity that dovetails with the Win 7 story. And of course we will be waiting with bated breath for the opening of the new Microsoft stores and how Microsoft tries to interpret the retail interaction between consumer and PC and the buying experience.

Office 2010 this has been referred to as table descriptions
Word 2010 lets you add Alt Text or a “table description” to tables in Word. If you’ve looked at the “What’s New” document for Office 2010 this has been referred to as table descriptions. However you won’t find that term in any of the Office Help documentation. In the Help documentation it is called adding Alt text to tables.
In Word 2010 place the cursor in a table cell and select the table by pressing Alt + J, L, K, T for the Table Tools, Layout Sub-Ribbon, Select, Table.
Once the Table is selected you can press the AppKey or Right mouse click on the table and choose Table Properties. Table Properties is the last item in the context menu which means you can press the Up arrow once to get to it.
Press Enter to open the Table Properties dialog. The last tab is called Alt text. You can get to it by pressing Ctrl + Tab to move forward through the Table Properties tabs or by pressing Ctrl + Shift + Tab to move backward through the Table properties tabs.
A new feature of Office 2010 is that when Office documents are sent through e-mail and saved, they open in “Protect” mode. This means that they can be read but not edited. It is designed as a protection for the end-user. JAWS 11 will announce that you are in Protect mode. This is not the same as having a protected document which cannot currently be read by adaptive technology. This is more like a preview mode that will let you read the document without exposing your computer to any on-board macros.
Press Alt + F, letter I, E to turn off Protect mode and turn on the ability to edit the document. This opens the Backstage area, chooses the Info item and activates the Protect button. The only option while a document is in Protect mode is to turn off Protect mode. Once you do this you will have access to other Backstage tools under the Info category.
The document will also be in Protect mode if you open it directly from Outlook.

Office 2010 uses something called a sandbox
Office 2010 is becoming a hot topic lately and while it’s easy to find information about the new ribbon changes and spark lines, I wanted to take a minute to talk about some Office 2010 features that are more important for those of us working on the administrative side of things and being asked to plan and conduct an Office 2010 deployment to our organization. So here are a couple items and tips to take into consideration as you prepare your rollout.
Licensing changes – Office 2010 now supports KMS and MAK activation methods. If you already have a KMS infrastructure in place, this is a nice addition to management capabilities and makes it easier to deploy 2010.
Protected View – Protected view for Office 2010 uses something called a sandbox which is essentially an isolated instance of the Office program which prevents the file from accessing vulnerable system locations and services. This mode is an improvement over methods implemented in 2007 which were often very slow to open files and therefore caused extreme end-user frustration.
When a file is opened from a non-trusted Internet site or other high risk location, the file will open in Protected View and the user will have the option of editing the document by clicking on the bar that appears, shown below.

The Windows 7 application automatically launches
Over the weekend I had an opportunity to perform a Windows 7 Upgrade on my Vista Home Premium 64 bit laptop; which was a longtime coming! I had had my fill of "Blue Screens" and finally decided to do something about it. While I was updating drivers and settings I came across the "Speech Recognition" configuration. I had just bought and installed a copy of Dragon Naturally Speaking, version 10 Standard a few days prior to performing the Windows 7 Upgrade. So, I decided to install and go through the "Speech Recognition" tutorial that is built into Windows 7 and compare the two.
The profile setup/tutorial took about the same amount of time to perform in each software; about 20-30 minutes. The key difference between the two was that in Dragon Speak you created a profile and had to read specific passages and phrases to help train it to your voice. The Windows 7 application does not have this feature, but it is profile based upon the current user logged onto the PC. The tutorials in each application were good with showing sample commands and exercises that helped to train you to the basics.
The Windows 7 application automatically launches upon logging in and the toolbar remains in the top center of the screen whereas the Dragon toolbar has to be launched from a shortcut or program files from the start menu. The basic commands are very similar and both programs allow you the ability to run your PC by voice command. You can open applications, browse and open files, surf the web and dictate into Microsoft Word, WordPad or notepad as well as other Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Outlook, Access, etc)
Windows 7 Speech Recognition is included in all versions of Windows 7 and is definitely worth setting up and using if you have a need for a speech to text software. I would have to say though that Dragon does a better job at interpreting what is being said into dictation and that would have to be due to the additional steps taken for the software to learn your speaking voice when setting up the profile for the application, but considering that Speech Recognition is now built into the operating system you really can't go wrong! I am still in my early testing of both of these applications and will report further findings once I have had more time to use them.

Windows 7 did not include a photo library
Why didn’t Windows 7 suffer the same growing pains?
Fast forward to 2009 to the Windows 7 release. Why didn’t the problems listed above impact 7 in the same way they did with Vista?
1. Bugs: Windows 7 was not a re-write. In fact, you could even consider it Vista Version 2 — really. Yes, MS made many improvements on the surface and under the hood, but the fact remains that most of Win 7 is, in fact, Vista. As a result, the opportunity to introduce new bugs went way down.
2. Drivers: Since Win 7 was not a complete re-write, the driver model did not change. Even though most hardware makers updated drivers for Win 7, the Vista era drivers were sufficient in most cases.
3. Hardware: Once again, since Win 7 is really Vista Version 2, the hardware requirements did not go up. So any Vista capable machine could run 7. In fact, due to lots of work optimizing the operating system, you could actually run Win 7 on fewer hardware resources than Vista required!
4. Crapware: Yes, crapware still exists, but Microsoft has put limits on what can be installed. In fact, they even limit the number of icons which can be “pinned” to the Windows 7 start menu. With any new store-bought system, you should still examine what is installed and remove what you can. Dell or HP will try to sneak their wireless manager onto some systems. The Decrappifier works on Win 7 also!
5. Core Apps: Windows 7 did not include a photo library, movie maker, or mail client. Instead, they directed you to a download of the new Live Essentials site. This is much cleaner and allows the Live apps to be developed and released independently of the Windows Client. No longer will you have to wait for a Windows Service Pack to add functionality to the mail client.
Fast forward to 2009 to the Windows 7 release. Why didn’t the problems listed above impact 7 in the same way they did with Vista?

When my roommates moved into their house about three
When my roommates moved into their house about three years ago, their backyard had a depressing, abandoned lot feel to it.
Over the last few years they have already made a ton of improvements, but this summer they decided the time had come for the major DIY landscape. Plants are a little bit like crack to them, so they knew if they got started that this was going to be a full-on binge! They picked a weekend when there was a big plant sale, borrowed a truck from a friend, rented a tiller for the day, and went to town.
I can’t really take credit for helping much with this project (besides moral support) …

But they didn’t need me!

Since the area right in front of the back door had turned into a major mud pit (and with two big dogs, that gets really old during our eight months of precipitation), they decided to put down a hardscape groundcover of gravel over about a third of the backyard space. And since there was a natural slope to the yard, they used a big island to separate the two levels. They rolled out the insanely carpet-like sod in the upper level of the yard, and they started planting — trees, succulents, ornamental grasses, and lots and lots of pretty flowers!
Even though there is a lot more going on in the “after” pictures, the different levels and zones of the yard actually work to make it feel larger. I am beyond impressed with the results of their handiwork to make our own personal backyard oasis.

With winter approaching fast it won’t be long
With winter approaching fast it won’t be long before you’ll be making that last mow of the year. Once that is done, it will be time to get the lawn mower ready to be stored away until next spring. If you follow a few simple steps, you can ensure that your lawn mower will still be running like new when it’s time to make that first mow of the year.
How to prepare your lawn mower for winter:
A lawn mower can be a big investment, especially if you have a riding lawn mower. Taking care of it properly will help to extend its life so you can get the most for your money. When it’s time to start cutting the grass again next year, you’ll be ready.
How to prepare your lawn mower for winter:
- Run all of the gas out of your mower.
- Disconnect the wire that’s connected to the spark plug.
- Use a water hose to wash all of the grass and debris out from under the deck of the mower and wipe it down with a cloth.
- Wipe down the top of the deck and the engine cover with a damp cloth.
- File and sharpen the mower blades.
- Spray any moving parts down with lubricant to prevent rust.
- Replace the grease on the steering, front axle and the pulleys located on the mowing deck. However, don’t over-grease the pulleys or it can get onto the belts and this could cause them to slip.
- Store in your backyard shed or someplace where it will be out of the weather.

When you want to create a beautiful backyard
When you want to create a beautiful backyard landscape, you might consider combining your plants with structures in your backyard. This can complete the overall look and also help soften structures that may look too sharp and less inviting without the plants around them.
When planning to add plants and structures in your backyard, your first thoughts should be of people in mind. You need to create a backyard space that people will enjoy to be around. A great landscape will help allow people to get the complete experience in the backyard so you also want to think about what you and your family will be doing in your backyard.
For example, people who are more active in their backyards will need more space to move around, unlike those who are less active. If your family is more active, you don’t want plants and structures to restrict your ability to get around in the backyard and have a good time.
When choosing your plants, keep in mind what they will be used for. The purpose of the trees will help you determine the size they should be. For example, there are trees for shade, trees for privacy and decorative trees. All of these can be worked into a backyard landscape but it starts with knowing which you need and where.
Types of structures you might have in your backyard include play areas, storage sheds, patios and decks or a gazebo. You can place plants in and around these structures to complete the look of your backyard. Remember that the plants you choose should add to the structure and the overall appeal of the yard, not overpower it. You can also incorporate plants into an overhang or garden wall. Hanging and crawling vines work really well for these purposes.

How to replace the default font in Windows7 system?
In order to solve the problems of display the default font, many people have suggested replacing the system font. It can ensure consistency throughout the system displays. However, many people find that replacing the system font is a very troublesome thing, often need a lot of steps and the operation has some risks. Here I share with you an easy way to replace the fonts .
1. First we should download the fonts which used for replacement. Here recommended a synthetic version of Times New Roman font.
